CONCEPT 03 / AUTOMOTIVE
Differential clutches
THE KEY CONCEPT
In a clutch-type limited-slip differential, clutches help transfer torque from one drive wheel to the wheel with more traction.
How it works
A differential lets the two wheels on an axle rotate at different speeds, which is important when a vehicle turns. A limited-slip differential also limits excessive speed differences when traction is uneven.
In a clutch-type design, friction clutch packs resist relative motion. Increased clamping force makes the clutch plates grip, helping transmit torque to the other wheel.
This description applies to clutch-type limited-slip differentials, not every differential. Other designs use mechanisms such as helical gears rather than clutch packs.
Remember this
Clutches help manage torque in a clutch-type limited-slip differential.
